shigella flexneri biochemical tests for the identification

Typical biochemical properties of Shigella spp. are:

  • lactose negative colonies (compare with E.coli)
  • D-mannitol fermentation (colour change around the mannitol tablet)
  • no acid from sucrose or cellobiose
  • urea hydrolysis negative (compare with K.pneumoniae)
  • acid from glucose without gas
  • hydrogen sulfide negative (compare with Salmonella enterica)

  • S.flexneri is ornithine negative (unlike S.sonnei)
